In response to growing community concerns, the Bloomington City Council is considering a six-month moratorium on the development of data centers within the city. This discussion took place during the Committee of the Whole meeting on May 18, 2026, where council members expressed unanimous support for the temporary halt.
The proposed moratorium aims to provide the city with time to thoroughly assess the potential impacts of large-scale data centers, often referred to as “hyperscale” centers, on local resources such as water and energy. Council members emphasized the need to understand these effects before permitting further development.
During the meeting, approximately 30 residents attended, with 14 members of the public voicing their concerns. Notably, all speakers were unanimously opposed to the establishment of data centers in Bloomington, highlighting issues related to resource consumption and environmental impact.
City staff have been directed to draft a moratorium ordinance, which is scheduled for consideration at the upcoming City Council meeting on May 26, 2026. This ordinance, if approved, would temporarily suspend the approval of new data center projects, allowing the city to conduct comprehensive studies and engage with the community to address the raised concerns.
